We hear all the time about the mind-body connection but how is this addressed in therapy? Many forms of therapy rely solely on talk and do not address the impact on your body.
I have often had clients say "I know logically that this is not true but I feel that it is."
This disconnect between their thoughts and feelings is often the disconnect from the mind and body.
Emotions live in our body. Sensations are the building blocks of our emotions. When we feel anxious, we may notice our racing heart or tightening of our chest or restlessness. In slowing down to notice the impact in our body, we can better help to reduce this anxiety.
Thoughts on the other hand are like lawyers - thoughts can argue both sides. It is often why it is hard to challenge our thoughts.
However, as we learn to calm our bodies, our minds will follow.
Additionally, our bodies hold wisdom that our minds may sometimes miss. By connecting with our somatic experience, we are also connecting better to our intuition.
By integrating somatic techniques into therapy, you may come to understand yourself better and reduce your distress.
This approach is particularly helpful for trauma. In understanding our fight, flight, freeze, appease systems - we can shift our nervous system and break out of being stuck or overwhelmed by our history of trauma.
